Humboldt impressive in topping Cougars, field

WEBSTER CITY -- The Humboldt girls cross country squad put on a show at the Lynx Invitational here on Tuesday.
The Wildcats secured gold, silver and bronze in the individual race and came away with the team title as well.
The girls race was split into two divisions: Purple and Gold. Humboldt claimed the Gold crown with 32 points.
Manson Northwest Webster (63) was the runner-up, followed by Roland-Story (73), St. Edmond (85) and Hampton-Dumont (93).
Twin sisters Avery Fisher (20:10.43) and Aubry Fisher (20:16.81) placed first and second, while freshman Jade Malo (20:31.63) was third for the Wildcats.
Humboldt’s Macey Rodgers (22:52.78) was eighth and Ashlyn Pettit (24:19.37) rounded out the scoring runners in 18th.
Manson Northwest Webster
The Cougars had a strong showing as well with one runner in the Top-10 and four athletes placing 12th through 15th.
Sophomore Maddie Wittrock was the top performer for the Cougars in the Gold division, taking ninth in 23:00.43.
Finishing in a pack for the Cougars was Kaylee Pugh (23:08.56), Hayden Oswald (23:30.08), Payton Petersen (23:34.54) and Ella Oswald (23:36.02), who were 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively.
St. Edmond
The Gaels earned two Top-10 showings in the Gold division, as Naomi Valles (22:19.79) and Grace Schlegel (22:37.87) were sixth and seventh, respectively.
"Everyone runs in the same hot conditions. We did a great job emphasizing hydration and preparation, and if you control that, you've done your best," said SEHS head coach Mike Szalat. "We can't control the weather. I think we did a good job of realizing that, so we got mentally tougher."
Greenlee Crimmins (25:33.71) was 25th, followed by Mae Pokorny (25:56.03) in 27th and Alex Leiting (26:06.64) in 29th. Lily Eslick (26.33.69) in 31st and Betsy Gruver (27:16.22) in 34th rounded out the Gael lineup.
"(Valles and Schlegel) ran good races," Szalat said. "Naomi did a job moving up and picking people off.
"Alex, Mae, and Greenlee got better. Betsy (Gruver) and Jennifer Touney did a good job running as well."
Southeast Valley
Emily Wilson (26:27.31) was the top runner for the Jaguars in 30th place. Charlie Dorsey (28:00.32) was 38th and Ruby Stimpson (28:43.77) took 42nd.
Meia Hefley (30:11.88) placed 47th.
Eagle Grove
Freshman London Parrott (25:03.07) was 23rd for the Eagles. Ingrid Pull (29:43.67) finished in 43rd.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows
Addyson Greenfield (29:27.36) was the top runner for the Cowgirls. Sofia Dahlgren (37:07.67) was next at 54th for CGD.
Algona
In the Purple division, Algona was fifth with 114 points. Webster City (125) placed sixth.
Ballard (23) was the team champion.
Charli Dodds (21:41.19) crossed in eighth for the Bulldogs, followed by Chelsy Vicente-Gomez (22nd in 24:16.32), Evelyn Kissinger (23rd in 25:12.59), Hadley Friedrich (31st in 26:16.65) and Karsyn Bailey (26:56.25, 36th).
Webster City
For the Lynx, Izzy Grossoehme (22:40.10) was 14th. Eighth-grader Lyla Brookshire (23:43.22) took 18th.
The host Lynx rounded out their efforts with Ru Andrade-Murillo (25:26.23) in 26th, Quynn Pruismann (27:14.45) in 38th and Marlene Saavedra Mendoza (27:36.85) in 40th.
Fort Dodge
Junior Laila Grantham (26:54.14) was the top finisher for the Dodgers, placing 35th. Senior Madison Carmody (27:10.40) was 37th and freshman Jalynn Jackson-Foy (32:12.01) took 52nd.
"The heat and the weather definitely impacted us, but everyone ran in the same conditions," said FDSH head coach Austin Read. "They're out there working hard. We will continue to make physical and mental progress.
"Some girls ran well. It's one meet. We have to move past it and look forward. If we put in the work, it will pay off later in the season."
