Dodgers roll past Mason City

Mason City had an answer for every run the Fort Dodge volleyball team brought at them.

The Riverhawks used that to record a sweep, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-15.

Mason City (6-7 overall, 5-1 in Iowa Alliance Conference North) has now beaten the Dodgers twice in a row (1-11, 1-3). Fort Dodge does hold a 19-9 advantage since 2007 against its long-standing rival.

"We just didn't show a lot of communication out there on the court," FDSH head coach Beth Wilder said. "That was the really frustrating part. We had a good practice and I felt good about the match going in. We knew Mason City had some strong middles that would make it tough, but we didn't show a lot of fight."

The Dodgers hung tough through the opening points in each set, but each time, the Riverhawks had an answer. Mason City used matching 6-2 runs to close out the first and second, and scored four of the final six in the third to end the match.

Fort Dodge was led by Adyson Friesth, as the junior tallied six kills. She added nine assists and five aces to her night. Grace Nichols and Brogan Miller each had five kills, with Ellie Doster recording nine assists and two kills.

Alyssa Waldera chipped in three kills and Holly Schaffer two.

"We've got some girls playing up and in new spots," Wilder said. "Some of that hurt with our communication and teamwork. When you get in a hole, it's difficult to rally back."

For Mason City, Finlee Carter had 11 kills and Aaliyah Perez recorded eight. Mara Dixon had four, with both Angelia Bublitz and Taleya Sanchez-Evansh finishing the match with three.

The Dodgers had nine ace serves, but also committed seven serving errors.

"We're going to get back at it on Wednesday," Wilder said. "That's all we can do."

Fort Dodge heads to Marshalltown on Thursday and is in Boone for a tournament with the host Toreadors, Estherville-LC and Grinnell on Saturday.
