HAMPTON – The St. Edmond girls tennis team put the finishing touches on another unbeaten North Central Conference run, sweeping Hampton-Dumont/CAL here Tuesday night by a final of 9-0.
Chloe Palmer, Abby Huss, Sophia Schlienz, Olivia Andrew, Jade Rock and Emmersyn Peters were all winners in singles for the Gaels, who have now won 26 consecutive league matches. They have gone undefeated five years in a row.
Palmer and Huss, Rock and Kaci McGonegle, and Peters and Abby Webster paired up to finish the night off with triumphs in doubles.
"It turned out to be a great night for tennis after being rained out on Monday," SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. "The only problem was that meant we had a meet and a volleyball match on the same day. Chloe, Abby and Olivia are all starters for volleyball, and the girls wanted to do both.
"I knew I needed at least one for doubles, so I put Chloe and Abby out there and they were able to breeze through just like in singles. They immediately left the court with (assistant coach) Jenny (Neverman) to get to Forest City in time for volleyball."
Palmer made her return to action after suffering an ankle injury, scoring an 8-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Huss won 8-0, Rock dropped just one game, Andrew two, and both Schlienz and Peters three each.
In doubles, Palmer and Huss won 8-0, Peters and Webster earned an 8-1 victory, and Rock and McGonegle pulled out an 8-6 triumph.
Webster and McGonegle also earned a junior varsity win.
St. Edmond will host the NCC Tournament on Wednesday.
