Gaels pass first regional test

The St. Edmond girls tennis team took care of business in impressive fashion here on Saturday in Class 1A regional play.
State qualifier Chloe Palmer, Abby Huss, Sophia Schlienz, Olivia Andrew and Jade Rock won their singles matches, clinching the dual vs. Carroll for the Gaels in a 5-0 shutout.
Due to weather, the match was moved indoors to the Fort Dodge Tennis Club.
All five Gaels won in straight sets, as the quintet dropped just 12 combined games.
"We were pretty evenly-matched going in, and the girls made sure to not give Carroll any chances," SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. "I'm super proud of the way the girls played. Playing inside isn't ideal, but they made the best of it and played some of their best tennis when it mattered most."
Palmer won at No. 1 over Bella Lu, 6-2, 6-2, with Huss posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 position. Schlienz dropped just two games, Andrew three and Rock three.
"Chloe earned a big win over a fellow state qualifier in Lu," Neverman said. "Abby and Sophia were dominant, Olivia battled through a bad ankle and Jade sealed it."
St. Edmond (8-2 overall) hosts North Central Conference rival Webster City in a semifinal on Wednesday. The Lynx knocked off Saydel in their opener.
