Gaels can’t solve Hawks

In the blink of an eye, the Remsen St. Mary's football squad proved they are back among the list of serious contenders on the eight-player landscape this year.
The Hawks, who were forced to the sidelines after a series of injuries a season ago, scored five touchdowns in the first quarter on their way to an 84-34 victory over St. Edmond here inside Dodger Stadium last Friday night.
Remsen St. Mary's (3-1 overall, 2-0 in the district) dominated in all aspects of the game, rushing for 408 yards and scoring on every possession. Dalton Klein had nine carries for 149 yards and four touchdowns, while adding a passing TD as well. Tyten Waldschmitt rushed 11 times for 117 yards and three scores.
"That was definitely the old Remsen St. Mary's team that came to play," SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. "They are big, they are physical and they do an excellent job running their offense.
"We didn't have an answer for them."
Thomas Ehn led the Gaels (2-2, 1-1), as the junior threw for 221 yards and ran for 93. Ehn had four touchdown passes, tossing three to Ty Mericle and one to freshman Jack Stucky. Ehn also had a rushing touchdown.
Mericle, a senior, caught eight passes for 126 yards. Classmate Griffin Laufersweiler added six receptions for 65.
"Thomas really showed what he is capable of," Dillon said. "He is a fighter and never quit out there. You love to see that out of your quarterback.
"We knew we had to win the turnover battle and try to control the game. Neither of those things happened for us."
St. Edmond had five turnovers on the evening, including a first quarter fumble that resulted in a quick turn in the momentum.
After Waldschmitt ran in from 25 yards out to make it 16-8 following the two-point conversion, the Hawks forced a fumble and fell on it. Waldschmitt ran it in on the next play and Remsen St. Mary's was off to the races.
"You just can't give a team like that a short field," Dillon said. "They are too good and too strong up front."
Ehn hit Mericle from 48 yards out just moments later, but the Hawks answered with five consecutive TDs before reaching halftime. Klein and Waldschmitt had 224 yards and six touchdowns on the ground in the opening 24 minutes.
St. Edmond now prepares for defending state champion and rival Bishop Garrigan in Algona. The Golden Bears handled North Iowa last week, 63-21.
Remsen St. Mary's heads to Kingsley-Pierson for district play.
