The Fort Dodge boys golf squad welcomed some of the top Class 4A programs from around the state on Tuesday for the Phil Joselyn Invitational at the Fort Dodge Country Club.
Despite a heat index that flirted with triple digits throughout the day, Dallas Center-Grimes was able to put together a round of 285, besting Waukee Northwest by one stroke. Norwalk, Waukee, Ankeny Centennial, Johnston, Indianola, Bishop Heelan, Ankeny and Sioux City East rounded out the Top-10.
The Dodgers placed 13th overall with a 326 in the 16-team field.
Senior Trace Rial fired an 80 for the low round for Fort Dodge, with classmate Mason Frevert adding an 81. Senior Davis Underberg had an 87, junior Camden Sassman an 88, sophomore Cameron Beck a 96 and sophomore Holden Doster a 98.
"It was a great measuring stick for us," FDSH head coach Nick Vinson said. "Dallas Center-Grimes shot a 1-over team score, and Waukee Northwest was just behind that. It’s really good to go up against that kind of competition.
"I felt like our short game let us down (collectively). We really struggled from 100 yards in. The chipping and putting ate our lunch."
Chase Perrin, a junior at Dallas Center-Grimes, carded a 67 to claim medalist honors at 4-under par. Drake Essing and Kohen Essing of Waukee Northwest were both in the red with rounds of two-under 69.
"We could have probably cut 10 to 15 strokes off our score with a round like we are capable of shooting," Vinson said. "I think we kind of hit a (physical and mental) wall with all the heat and humidity.
"But compared to where the program was just a couple of years ago, I'm happy with how we played."
Fort Dodge is at Marshalltown on Thursday, Sept. 10.
