ALGONA – The Humboldt girls cross country team placed three runners in the Top-5 here Monday, finishing third overall at the Algona Invitational.
Clear Lake placed first with 60 points, as Sioux Center was second with 87. The Wildcats tallied 97 for third, followed by Forest City and Spencer. St. Edmond finished ninth, the host Bulldogs 10th, Webster City 11th, Bishop Garrigan 13th, Emmetsburg 14th and Fort Dodge 16th.
Avery Fisher earned runner-up honors to pace Humboldt, finishing in 19:52. Sioux Center's Audrina Jones won in 19:23. Fisher's teammate Jade Malo placed third in 20:07, with Aubry Fisher fifth in 20:20.
For the Gaels, Grace Schlegel led the team, finishing 19th overall in 21:53. Naomi Valles placed 27th in 22:10, followed by Lily Eslick in 72nd, Mae Pokorny in 78th, Greenlee Crimmins in 79th, Alex Leiting in 97th, and Betsy Gruver in 102nd.
"Grace and Naomi are giving us a nice 1-2 punch," SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. "They ran a smart race and set a nice pace. Lily also did a nice job of picking runners off.
"I've been really happy with the last three weeks of practice."
Linnie Pratt paced the Dodgers, as the junior was 30th in 22:29. Laila Grantham finished 94th, Madison Carmody was 103rd, Ella Johnson placed 111th and Jalynn Jackson-Foy 112th.
"Linnie ran incredibly well and had her best race of the season," FDSH head coach Austin Read said. "She competed well and stayed with runners during the second mile.
"The other girls, I feel like didn't run quite as well. They didn't handle the sloppy conditions of the course very well, but the effort was good."
Bishop Garrigan's Julia Swift was between the Humboldt runners, taking fourth in 20:17.
Macey Rodgers was 33rd and Maren Lindquist 62nd for the other counting runners for the Wildcats.
Algona's Mara Davis placed 40th, with Chels Vicente-Gomez 50th, Hadley Friedrich 64th, Evelyn Kissinger 67th and Elise Duff 77th. Izzy Grossohme paced Webster City, as she finished 23rd overall in 22:03. Lyla Brookshire was 37th, Mckenna Buakham 74th, Rubi Andrade-Murillo 85th and Marlene Saavedra-Mendoza 86th.
In addition to Swift, Bishop Garrigan had Rachel Kahle in 54th, Eva Kohlhaas in 81st, Charlie Steir in 109th and Sheila Reding in 110th. Emmetsburg's runners included Taylor Thayer in 47th, Mya Morton in 59th, Janey-Lynn Reedy in 80th, Abigail Biddle in 95th and Bella Zylstra-Reedy in 96th.
Next action for both the Dodgers and Gaels will be the Fort Dodge Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 8.
