Area shines at Emmetsburg

EMMETSBURG – Grace Schlegel scored a runner-up finish here Tuesday at the E-Hawk Invitational, helping the St. Edmond girls cross country squad place third overall.
Sibley-Ocheyedan was first and Manson Northwest Webster finished second – two points ahead of the Gaels. Emmetsburg, Bishop Garrigan, Pocahontas Area and Estherville-LC rounded out the team scoring.
The Manson Northwest Webster boys captured the team crown over North Iowa by two points. St. Edmond took third. Estherville-LC, Emmetsburg, Bishop Garrigan and Harris-Lake Park rounded out the scoring.
Schlegel clocked a time of 21:12, as Bishop Garrigan's Julia Swift was the race winner in 20:17. Pocahontas Area eighth-grader Olivia Maske finished third, and Maddie Wittrock from Manson Northwest Webster was fifth.
"What a nice birthday present for Grace," SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. "She set per PR by a second, ran a great race and closed the gap on Swift.
“I thought she ran a really smart race."
Naomi Valles turned in a Top-10 showing for St. Edmond, as she placed seventh in 21:54. Greenlee Crimmins was 27th, Mae Pokorny was 28th, Lily Eslick finished 31st, Betsy Gruver was 34th and Adelyn Bangert finished 40th.
"Naomi has been battling some illness, so for her to come out and run as well as she did was a great sign," Szalat said. "Three of the girls had a PR and five had their best runs of the season.
"I feel like we're really moving in the right direction. I’m excited about the progress they have made."
For the Cougar girls, Hayden Oswald followed Wittrock in 15th. Kaylee Pugh was 23rd, Payton Petersen finished 24th, Kathleen Hildreth was 26th, Ella Oswald was 37th and McKenna Becker placed 41st.
Along with Maske, Pocahontas Area's Sawyer Storms crossed in 21st, Ashlyn Duitscher was 43rd, Natalie Sommerlot took 45th and Ana Franco was 46th. Garrigan's other counting runners included Rachel Kahle in 12th, Eva Kohlhaas in 22nd, Charlie Steir in 50th and Sheila Reding in 51st.
Emmetsburg's Janey-Lynn Reedy was the top E-Hawk, crossing home in 13th. Mya Morton finished 19th, Taylor Thayer 20th, Abigail Biddle 29th and Bella Zylstra-Reedy 30th.
Ben Cox of Emmetsburg was the boys race winner in 17:28. Levi Ollinger from MNW crossed third in 18:15, while teammate Kyle Widlund was fifth in 18:36.
Erik Larson and Aidan Reel led the Gaels. Larson finished sixth in 18:53 and Reel took eighth in 19:01.
Gordon Seeden finished 14th, Andrew Barwin was 21st, Ethan Cibert placed 30th, Abram Ribbens was 38th and Ashton Kuker finished 46th for St. Edmond.
"Much of the same with the boys as the girls," Szalat said. "Six had PRs and two turned in their best runs of the season. I feel like we are trending in the right direction by working hard, taking it seriously and really putting in the time and effort.
"It was great having Gordon back. He ran good race. Andrew is getting closer to those top guys."
Logan Meyer placed 12th overall for MNW. Rowan Poutre finished 17th, Thomas Lundberg was 20th and John Johnny Hyink finished 36th.
Elijah Cox gave Emmetsburg a second Top-10 runner, as he crossed in seventh overall in 18:57. Miles Rouse was 28th, Asher Woodford 40th and Inaki Aguilar 44th.
Garrigan's Samuel Foix was 10th in 19:15, as Caiden Buckner finished 13th, Ethan Murphy 27th, Kayden Richter 51st and Corbin Darling 53rd.
Pocahontas Area's Justin Shearer was 29th, Costly Ordonez 31st and Paul Peterson 42nd. North Union's Finnely Rockdaschel took 45th and Edward Champney finished 47th.
In junior varsity action, Abby Tofilon was seventh to lead the Gael girls. William Gubbels paced the SEHS boys with a fourth-place performance.
St. Edmond will head to Humboldt on Monday.
GAEL MIDDLE SCHOOLERS IN ACTION
EMMETSBURG – The St. Edmond middle school cross country squads competed here Tuesday night at the E-Hawk Invitational.
Oliver Gruver picked up a first-place finish to lead the Gaels, who were second overall in the team standings.
Harrison Carzoli was seventh, Andrew Knox placed 13th, Isaac Banks was 27th, Liam Schumacher finished 28th and Weston Gubbels was 70th.
The Gael girls finished third overall in the middle school standings, led by Samantha Condon, who took seventh. Jewel Winninger finished 16th, Evie Nelson 22nd, Libby Pokorny 23rd and Adelaide Gruver 32nd.
