DODGE CITY, Kan. – For the third straight Saturday, the Iowa Central football team hits the road for a contest with a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference opponent.
The No. 10 Tritons square off with Dodge City from Memorial Stadium beginning at noon.
Iowa Central (3-1 overall) scored a third straight win last weekend, besting Coffeyville, 31-27. They also topped Highland in Kansas the week before, 64-0, and downed Ellsworth earlier this month, 63-7.
"We are progressing in the right direction," ICCC head coach Colby Kratch said. "We've got a few things on offense and defense that need to be cleaned up, but I was proud of the way the guys executed in the heat of the moment (vs. Coffeyville).
"We lost a close game in the opener (to Butler), so it was nice to win a close one, especially on the road."
Gabe McWilliams threw for 184 yards and a touchdown to TyJohn Brooks, as Ethan Johnson ran for 105 yards and a score. Kamare Williams had 92 yards receiving on eight receptions, with Johnson adding 35 yards in the passing game vs. Coffeyville.
Johnson's 1-yard TD run with 52 seconds left erased a 27-24 deficit and snapped a run of 15 straight points by the Red Ravens.
The defense for the Tritons was key, as Mike Lane had an interception return for a score midway through the third and Chase Pearsall fell on a fumble in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game.
"Scoring two touchdowns on defense and holding (Coffeyville) to 230 total yards was really, really great," Kratch said. "We've just got to keep taking it a game at a time."
Dodge City (2-2) owns wins over Garden City and Independence around losses to New Mexico Military Institute and No. 1 Iowa Western. The Conqs piled up over 500 yards of total offense in a 43-42 victory over Independence, led by Joshua Taylor's 168 yards rushing and two scores.
Tim Carpenter added 259 yards passing and three TDs, rushing for another 74 with a score. Omarion Lewis caught eight passes for 126 and Armani Rogers had six for 95 with a touchdown.
Iowa Central claimed a 49-0 decision last year over Dodge City, as the series is tied 5-5 all-time between the two.
The Tritons will get a week off after their extended run of road games before returning to Kansas to take on Garden City on Saturday, Oct. 10.
