Triton teams are ready to tee off

By Dana Becker 3 min read

For Kris Graewin and the Iowa Central golf program, last year was one to remember.

Both the Triton men and women qualified for the NJCAA National Championships, showcasing just how far the teams have come on a grand scale.

Now, the task of replacing many of the talent individuals who helped guide Iowa Central begins.

The Triton men placed 15th overall at the NJCAA Div. II tournament, with Francis Lockwood earning All-America status. Lockwood is now at Southern Illinois University to compete at the NCAA Div. I level, along with five others who graduated last spring.

"We have a lot of production to replace," Graewin said. "We've got a great, hungry group that loves to play golf.

"We're deep and think we've got a group that can compete at the highest of levels."

South Central Calhoun prep Caleb Juhl and Webster City grad Syrus Willard are both on the roster for the Tritons this year.

For the Iowa Central women, Azul Orantes Guzman, Okira Quintero and Syeda Laiba Shah are back in the fold. In two years of the NJCAA Div. II championships being held, the Tritons have qualified as a team and won an individual title, as Ivanna Becerra-Diaz claimed gold in 2025.

"With our three returning ladies that went to nationals last year, we are adding a couple of freshmen," Graewin said. "We're looking to get back to nationals and compete for a national championship again."

Iowa Central placed 15th as a squad on the women’s side this past spring at nationals, as Quintero was 19th overall and Laiba Shah finished 34th.

The golf season is split into two parts, as invitationals are held in the fall with nationals taking place in the spring. The Triton women open on Aug. 24-25 at the Mount Marty Invitational in South Dakota, while the men head to the War at the Moor in Creston on Friday, Aug. 28.
