The St. Edmond volleyball team had a strong showing at their own invitational on Saturday.
The Gaels went 3-2. Aplington-Parkersburg was the team champion, finishing the tournament 5-0.
North Central Conference foe Webster City was 4-1. Pocahontas Area was 2-3 and Bishop Garrigan won one match. Southeast Valley was 0-5.
The Gaels beat Southeast Valley 21-12 and 21-15. They also beat Bishop Garrigan 21-7, losing 21-12 and winning 15-9. Their third win came against the Indians, 21-19 and 21-16.
"In our matches against Southeast Valley and Bishop Garrigan, we saw a lot of really good swings by our hitters, keeping ourselves aggressive while still playing smart volleyball," Heffernan said.
St. Edmond fell to Aplington-Parkersburg 21-11, 21-9.
"There were a lot of good teams at the tournament," said first year head coach Lindsay Heffernan. "Aplington-Parkersburg deserves the recognition they have gotten in the rankings.
"Their team is very good at passing and an overall offensive threat. I was hoping we were going to keep up with them better than we did, but congratulations to them. They play solid volleyball."
They also lost to Webster City 21-16. They won the second game 23-21 and lost Game three 15-11.
"Our match against Webster City was intense with close scoring games. They have a solid team," Heffernan said. "Unfortunately, we had two key players fall with ankle injuries during the second game.
"I was pleased with the players who came in and stepped up for us, still keeping us within reach. We weren't quite able to execute for the overall match win."
The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Storm Lake.
