Area girls get season started

GOWRIE -- The Manson Northwest Webster girls opened the season in impressive fashion, placing as the runner-up squad at the Southeast Valley Invitational on Thursday.
The Cougars scored 71 points, finishing behind only champion Madrid (38) – ranked second. MNW had all five counting runners place in the Top-20.
Kathleen Hildreth (22:37.15) was the top performer in 10th for the Cougars. Maddie Wittrock (22:48.40) was 13th.
The Cougars rounded things out with Payton Peterson (23:23.82), Hayden Oswald (23:26.12) and Ella Oswald (23:26.86) in 19th, 20th and 21st.
The St. Edmond girls turned in a fourth-place performance with 117 points and placed two runners in the Top-15. Sophomore Grace Schlegel (22:42.69) was 11th and junior Naomi Valles (22:58.80) was 15th.
"Grace and Naomi had good races," SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. "Grace ran about 31 seconds faster than last year here, and Naomi was 1:15 faster."
Placing 36th for the Gaels was Mae Pokorny (25:31.26). Greenlee Crimmins (25:41.16) was 39th, and Lily Eslick (25:57.76) took 43rd.
Alex Leiting (26:17.79) crossed in 47th and Adelyn Bangert (27:02.07) in 53rd to round out the Gael lineup.
"I'm happy with the way the girls ran," Szalat said. "Naomi closed the gap between one and two. It was a great meet from Mae, who PR'd by 1:26 and is stepping up to be our No. 3."
Fort Dodge
Junior Linnie Pratt turned in the top effort for the Dodgers, placing 27th in a time of 24:40.80. Classmate Laila Grantham (26:27.69) was 48th.
Madison Carmody (27:09.44, 55th), Ella Johnson (30:25.93, 73rd) and Reina Lacina (31:43.67, 77th) took the final three spots.
"Our girls are working hard, and they’re frustrated because they didn't do their best," said first-year FDSH head coach Austin Read. "As long as they keep focusing on daily improvement, we’ll be fine.
"This will be a motivation to get better and faster and take our intensity up a notch moving forward."
Southeast Valley
Emily Wilson (26:10.11) was the top runner for the Jaguars, placing 45th.
Charlie Dorsey (27:04.43) crossed in 54th and Ruby Stimpson (27:23.15) took 58th.
Newell-Fonda
The Mustangs placed three runners in the Top-25.
Danika Meyer (23:48.45) was the top finisher, placing 22nd. Elliot Hamilton (24:13.64) and Kara Kauman (24:22.74) were 25th and 26th, respectively.
Greene County
Averi Jablonski (22:03.99) grabbed a sixth-place medal for Greene County.
South Central Calhoun
Jossa Haupert (23:06.18) was the top finished for the Titans in 16th place.
Sophia Smith (25:36.57) was 38th.
