Wahlert impressive in rout

By Chris Johnson 2 min read

Second-seeded Dubuque Wahlert used the home run ball on Monday -- but not from the career home run leader, as she was dealing in the circle.

The Golden Eagles (36-6 overall) hit two homers as they earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a 9-1 victory over seventh-seeded West Delaware (25-12).

Wahlert will face two-time defending (2A) champion Van Meter (33-6), who moved up to Class 3A this season. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Iowa Central Field.

Julia Roth is the state's career home run leader with 74, but it was teammate Ruth Tauber and Natalie Ruba who went deep in the opener. Tabuer was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs. She also had two doubles.

Ruba drove in two. Roth had two hits and scored a run. Hayley Lang also had an RBI.

Roth picked up the win, going five innings with four hits and eight strikeouts in the five-inning contest.

Sofia Schulte had the lone RBI for West Delaware, which will now play Albia on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. on Iowa Central Field.
