Late rally pushes Dodgers past Tigers in ranked clash
CEDAR FALLS — The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team showed their resolve here on Monday night.
Down 5-3 to No. 10 (5A) Cedar Falls in the seventh with two outs on the board, Macy Wills stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI double to tie it. One batter later, Calliegh Zimmermann gave the Dodgers a 6-5 lead that proved to be the game-winner over the Tigers.
“These girls just never give up,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “They are always doing whatever they need to do to find success. (Monday) it was Macy and Calliegh.”
Wills drove in Ellie Doster and Maeleena Meyer, who both singled with two outs to start the rally. Doster finished 3-for-4; Wills went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored; and Zimmermann had two hits with the game-winning RBI.
Meg Marsh drove in a run, as did Aubrey Alstott, who picked up the win inside the circle. Marsh and Brooklyn Gilliland each stole a base for Fort Dodge (35-4 overall).
“We put this schedule together to prepare us for the postseason,” Adams said. “We knew it would be a challenge, especially with a pretty young group, but these girls want it.”
Fort Dodge scored first in the opening inning when Wills drove in Teryn Rippentrop. Marsh plated Wills in the fourth to tie it at 2-all, with Alstott knocking in Meyer to tie it once again at 3-3.
This marked the first meeting between the Dodgers and Cedar Falls since 2018, with Fort Dodge winning all nine since 2013.
The Dodgers wrap up their regular season on Tuesday at No. 8 (5A) Waukee. Fort Dodge picked up a 6-2 victory over the Warriors last year.
Following that, it will be regional time. The Dodgers take on either Sioux Center or MOC-Floyd Valley in a semifinal at Rogers Park on Saturday night.
