The St. Edmond baseball team honored seniors Grant Galles, Kinnick Henning, Max Webster, Jackson Calvert, Jack McElroy, Ethan Swisher and Carson Bargfrede here Monday night at Rogers Park.

Algona picked up the North Central Conference sweep by scores of 7-4 and 10-0 in six innings, securing at least a share of the league title.

While the end result was not what Gael head coach Jordan Miller wanted, he knows it was an opportunity to honor the seven graduated players.

“These seniors have done everything the right way,” Miller said. “Whether you have been out five, four, three years, or just coming back out this season, they have done it all the right way, so it was a great chance to give back to them.

“We did a few things different compared to what we might have done on another night, but it had not impact on the end result.”

The Bulldogs (19-9 overall, 12-2 in league) are finished with their conference schedule, as Webster City (18-8, 10-2) has a doubleheader with Iowa Falls-Alden left. The two split their season series earlier this year.

In the opener, Algona erased a 3-2 St. Edmond lead with a five-run fifth, overcoming McElroy’s 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Bargfrede and Julian Blanco each drove in runs, as Maddox Shirbroun pitched two scoreless innings with a strikeout.

Brooks Kuhlmann drove in three runs for the Bulldogs, as Tate Garman and Aiden Engel each had two hits. Garman scored twice, with West Streit earning the win, striking out six.

“We kind of gave them an extra out or an extra strike, and they took advantage of it,” Miller said. “We didn’t play poor in the field, it was just that one mistake we made turned into two, three hits for them.”

In the nightcap, Galles, McElroy, Webster and Garrett Royster each had a hit for St. Edmond. Dawson Elsbecker scored four times for Algona, with Garman driving in two and scoring twice.

Engel had three RBI and pitched a four-hitter, striking out six.

Up next for the Gaels will be Glidden-Ralston back here on Friday night in a Class 1A, District 5 opener while the Bulldogs head to Pocahontas Area on Tuesday night.
