Barely 12 hours after scoring a pair of run-rule victories, the 10th-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team found itself locked in a tug-of-war with Iowa City West here on Saturday at Rogers Park.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh as part of the Iowa Central Invitational, the Dodgers plated the tying and winning runs to secure a 3-2 victory over the Trojans.
Cael Adams knocked in Davis Underberg to tie it before Kolton Schiltz plated Adams on a full-count single to left for the walk-off triumph, extending Fort Dodge’s win streak to four. The Dodgers (19-4 overall) finished the week 6-1.
“That game really showed the heart and fight of our guys,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “In about the second or third inning, I looked to (assistant coaches Connor) McLeod and (Rick) Pederson and told them we were going to have to try and manufacture some runs. They had a really good pitcher who was on.
“Our guys did a great job. Kolton stepped up and worked the count to his favor, Jaxson (Dencklau) had a big walk in the seventh and Cael Adams has really been a tremendous No. 9 hitter.”
Schiltz and Tru McBride each finished with two hits. Davis Underberg added an RBI in the fourth that gave the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead.
Tanner Peterson pitched the first six innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Both runs scored against Peterson were unearned.
“Tru had some big hits, Davis had some big hits and Tanner did a great job on the mound,” Utley said. “You really learn a lot about yourself and your team in games like this.”
Mason Frevert pitched a perfect seventh, working around a walk to keep it a one-run deficit.
For Iowa City West (4-15), Owen Harms pitched a six-hitter, striking out eight. The Trojans are led by former Dodger assistant coach Jamie O’Meara.
“I’ve known Coach O’Meara for a long time. He said this is just how their season has gone,” Utley said. “(Harms) has been solid all year, but hadn’t had any luck go in his favor.
“We had a good week. When you play seven games, you can stumble more than once, but we had just that one loss (to Des Moines Roosevelt) and it was a plus to go 6-1.”
Fort Dodge is at Des Moines East (3-12) on Monday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
