Lopsided sweep for No. 9 Dodgers at DM Lincoln

DES MOINES — A doubleheader loss on Monday didn’t sit well with the 9th-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team, so on Wednesday, the Dodgers took their frustrations out on Des Moines Lincoln.

Fort Dodge (25-7 overall) scored a combined 34 runs in 18-4 and 16-0 five-inning wins over the Railsplitters (8-19).

“They definitely did (concentrate on bouncing back),” said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. “We were running into their fifth and sixth pitchers, so we took advantage of that.

“The guys had fun and hammered the ball, which was good to see.”

The Dodgers did their damage with two outs in both contests, combining for 23 runs with two put away. Fourteen of the 16 runs in the nightcap were scored with two gone.

“We had good production throughout the entire lineup,” Utley said. “I think in the 10 innings that we played, we only went down 1-2-3 once.

“We hit through the entire lineup and scored a lot of runs — again — with two outs.”

Fort Dodge pounded out 13 hits from eight different batters — six of whom had multiple hits. The bottom four hitters in the lineup were a combined 8-for-13 with six of the 14 RBI.

Tru McBride had another big effort in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a double and his 10th home run of the season — tied for tops in the state. McBride also drove in four runs.

Hayden Porter was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Davis Underberg, Jaxson Dencklau, Tanner Peterson and Cal Pederson all had two hits each. Pederson had two RBI, while Underberg and Denklau added one each.

Will McElroy had a home run and drove in two runs. Bo Marsh also had an RBI.

Kolton Schiltz was 0-for-2 with two hard-hit balls that were hit right to outfielders and on the warning track. Schiltz also drew three walks and scored twice.

“Our guys just hit the ball well,” Utley said. “Will launched one into the wind that I don’t think has landed yet.

“Kolton was right on it. I thought Bo battled all night. Tru had the big home run. I don’t think you can find anyone in our lineup that had a bad night.”

Reggie Pederson (4-2) earned the win, going five innings with three strikeouts.

“Reggie threw a good game,” Utley said. “He was in control and pitched well.”

In the nightcap, Cael Adams (4-1) pitched a five inning one-hitter with six strikeouts.

“Cael did a nice job,” Utley said. “Any time you throw a one-hitter…I don’t care who it is against, that’s impressive.

“He was solid in the first and had a little bit of a bump in the second, but was strong in the final three innings which is encouraging to see. He’s a competitor.”

The Dodgers had 13 hits in the nightcap — all singles. Porter was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs. Marsh was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Underberg and Mason Frevert drove in two runs each.

Keaton Hawkins, Schiltz, Shaun Begalle, and Cal Pederson all drove in runs.

Fort Dodge is back in action on Thursday at Marshalltown.
