DAYTON — For the first time since the 2018 season, the St. Edmond baseball team has a four-game win streak on its resume.

The Gaels extended their run with a thrilling 12-9 victory here Tuesday night over Southeast Valley.

St. Edmond (5-4 overall) jumped on the board early, as freshman Blake Bartlett hit his first varsity home run with a three-run shot in the opening inning. Jack McElroy added a two-RBI hit to make it 5-0.

The Jaguars would rally, taking the lead with a six-run fourth. The Gaels then answered back, first tying it in the fifth before winning it in the seventh.

Garrett Royster singled to start the top of the seventh, followed by a walk for Kinnick Henning and a bunt single by Grant Galles. Bartlett was walked with the bases loaded to make it 10-9.

Coltin Fevold then took the first pitch he saw to the outfield, driving in both Henning and Galles.

“We got to their bullpen and that gave us a chance,” SEHS head coach Jordan Miller said. “Garrett starts us off by getting on and Kinnick does the same, which put a lot of pressure on them. Grant lays down a perfect bunt and Garrett got a great jump to get to third.

“These kids just continue to want it and they have done everything we’ve asked of them as coaches.”

In the six-run fourth for Southeast Valley, Dawson Tuel had a two-RBI double. Both Karson Roper and Logan Jaeschke added RBI hits.

Henning finished with four walks, three runs scored and two steals, Galles was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Bartlett had two hits with three walks and four RBI, and Fevold had four hits and stole two bases.

Jack McElroy drove in two and earned the win on the mound, pitching the final two innings with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

“Jack came in and pounded the zone,” Miller said. “Coltin gave us two innings that we needed to give us a chance and Jacob (Nieland) pitched much better than his line showed because we didn’t play defense behind him like we needed to.”

For the Jaguars, Casey Hanson scored two runs, Kolton Ollinger had two hits and scored twice, Jaeschke had two hits and drove in two, Roper had two hits and plated two runs, and Tuel had two RBI.

St. Edmond will look to make it five straight for the first time since 2018 when they take on third-ranked (Class 3A) Sioux City Heelan this Saturday in Le Mars at the CYO Tournament. The Gaels also face off against Le Mars Gehlen.

Southeast Valley is at Sioux Central on Wednesday night.
