Garrigan holds off Gaels in baseball
ALGONA — A couple tough innings kept the St. Edmond baseball team from securing a win over rival Bishop Garrigan here Thursday night, as the Golden Bears prevailed, 8-5.
Bishop Garrigan (14-7 overall) scored three in the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth, erasing a Gael (12-9) lead to win for the 10th consecutive time in the series.
Brad Meister was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Golden Bears, as Tate Foertsch had two hits and drove in a run. Aidan Deitering added an RBI and scored a run, with Henry Bode scoring twice.
In the seventh, St. Edmond made a run at Bishop Garrigan when Coltin Fevold scored on an error. The Gaels had the bases loaded with two outs, but Eli Casey came on in to get the final out and earn the save.
Carter Schwab went six-plus, allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts.
“I’m very proud of the guys for fighting for seven innings,” SEHS head coach Jordan Miller said. “We had a couple big plays go our way, and a couple bounces not go our way; that’s baseball, but these kids stood in there and went down swinging in the seventh with the bases loaded.”
For St. Edmond, Grant Galles had a triple and a double, scoring a run and driving in another. Blake Bartlett finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, as Julian Blanco and Jack McElroy each drove in a run.
Carson Bargfrede went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
McElroy pitched four-plus innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Thomas Ehn had two strikeouts in relief.
The Gaels host Algona on Monday for a North Central Conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. to conclude the regular season. Bishop Garrigan welcomes in North Union Friday night.
