Gaels defeat Eagle Grove

EAGLE GROVE — Jordan Miller brought his new baseball team to his old coaching grounds here Thursday night and left with a victory.

Miller and St. Edmond picked up a 16-5 victory over Eagle Grove. Miller led the Eagles for 12 seasons before taking over the Gaels this year.

A five-run fourth helped St. Edmond (11-7 overall) break a 2-2 tie and take control, as they would add four more in the fifth before scoring three in the sixth and two in the seventh on 17 hits.

“It was just a weird day in general,” Miller said. “We didn’t start off very fast, but seeing a pitcher for the first time, that is bound to happen. Once we settled in, we got barrels on baseballs and really took off.”

Julian Blanco had a home run, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Coltin Fevold had a triple and Blake Bartlett a double. Blanco’s two-run shot scored Fevold in the second, tying the game up.

“Julian has been on fire,” Miller said. “He’s taken the position of (playing) first base and ran with it since he got the opportunity. He’s doing a great job.”

Garrett Royster was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored, Ethan Swisher was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, Grant Galles drove in two runs on two hits, and Jackson Calvert had three runs scored and an RBI.

Jack McElroy scored twice, as did fellow senior Carson Bargfrede. Swisher, Galles and Calvert each stole two bases.

In the fifth, Swisher had a two-RBI hit to center that plated both Blanco and Calvert, giving the Gaels a lead they would never surrender.

Thomas Ehn got the start on the mound, going six with six strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.

“Thomas said his arm felt great and he could have finished the game,” Miller said. “But we need to get guys innings for situations that we need outs in going forward, so we went to Ethan there in the seventh.”

For the Eagles (3-12), Jackson Babcock drove in three runs on three hits and both Adrian Whipple and Gavin Pedersen each scored twice with two hits.

St. Edmond is at Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Monday for a North Central Conference doubleheader while Eagle Grove hosts Belmond-Klemme Friday night.

Starting at $4.62/week.
