MARSHALLTOWN — The No. 9 (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team continued their dominance over Marshalltown, sweeping an Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader here Thursday night.
Scores were 16-0 in four innings and 9-2.
Davis Underberg needed just 54 pitches to get through his four innings of work on the mound, tossing a one-hitter with five strikeouts and a walk. The junior also helped himself at the plate, driving in two runs.
“We knew what Davis could do on the mound,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “We hadn’t used him as a starter yet this year, but he looked good in relief, so we figured we should see what we could get out of him.
“He mixed his pitches well and located them.”
The Dodgers (27-7 overall, 10-2 in the league) also received a home run from Kolton Schiltz and a triple courtesy of Hayden Porter. Schiltz scored twice and drove in three, as Porter had three runs scored and was 2-for-2.
Cal Pederson scored three times, Tru McBride scored twice and had an RBI, Will McElroy drove in two, Bo Marsh was 2-for-2 and Reggie Pederson swiped a pair of bases.
Fort Dodge plated three runs in the first, six in the second, five in the third and two more in the fourth.
“They are pretty confident at the plate right now,” Utley said. “Good approaches with few and far between at-bats that we are giving away. We had a few too many strikeouts in game two, but we still hit the ball hard; Marshalltown took some hits away by playing deep in the outfield because of what we were doing.”
Porter, Schiltz, McBride and Marsh drove in a combined eight runs, scoring six times with seven hits in the nightcap. Schiltz and McBride both hit a home run, as McBride added a triple and Marsh a double.
Jaxson Dencklau was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
McBride currently leads the state in home runs with 11, while Schiltz is now at seven. McBride’s total has tied Alex Alstott (2011) for the most in the program since 2000.
Eddy Diosdado hit 14 in 2008 and 13 in 2009.
“It’s great to see those guys continue to put the ball over the wall,” Utley said. “Kolton’s two homers were crushed, and that is a big ballpark to hit a home run in.”
On the mound, McElroy went three, striking out two on 40 pitches. Dencklau pitched three innings of one-hit baseball, striking out three.
Fort Dodge has now defeated Marshalltown 24 times in 25 games since 2020.
The Dodgers, who have now won at least 27 games for just the 10th time in program history, host Ames on Monday for another league doubleheader.
