Gael girls earn two silvers at Cadet Relays
IOWA FALLS — The St. Edmond girls track and field team scored a pair of runner-up finishes here Monday at the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadet Relays.
Grundy Center was crowned overall champions, as Webster City finished second. Humboldt was third followed by AGWSR, South Hardin, Iowa Falls-Alden, the Gaels and Eagle Grove.
Grace Schlegel was the runner-up in the 1,500 for St. Edmond, as she also anchored the distance medley relay to a fourth. Schlegel finished the 1,500 in a time of 5:26.36, placing only behind Humboldt’s Aubry Fisher.
Naomi Valles picked up a second in the 3,000 and was fifth in the 1,500. Valles went 12:18.26 in the 3,000, which was won by Avery Fisher, Aubry’s sister, while turning in a time of 5:49.79 in the 1,500.
The 4×200 for the Gaels claimed silver in 1:58.48 behind Ella Vandi, Ava Bradley, Breckyn Ulrich and Brianna Saathoff. The distance medley, which went 5:00.93, consisted of Kenzie Nolte, Alex Leiting, Adelyn Bangert and Schlegel.
“We did some good things,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “Had a few girls running races they normally don’t run, and everyone stepped up and did a good job.
“We’re still waiting on a track meet with good weather, but the girls fought through the wind and cold, competing against some good competition.”
Mia Bella Johnson captured the junior varsity 200 for the Gaels.
Webster City swept the throwing events, as Amanda Lahr won the shot put with a toss of 36-11.25 and Avery Poppen the discus at 108-11.5. The shuttle hurdle relay of Briley VanDeer, Kali Hartnett, Tristyn Wright and Tessa Hansen scored gold in 1:12.37.
Izzy Grossoehme was second in both the 200 and 400, VanDeer added a runner-up in the 100 hurdles and Jakaela Cherry the same in the shot put. The Lynx also had seconds in the 4×800 relay (Haedyn Soesbe, Evie Davis, Ariauna Reed, Rubi Andrade-Murillo) and sprint medley relay (Hartnett, Isabel Weinschen, Hansen, Grossoehme).
Along with Aubry Fisher winning the 1,500 in 5:23.07 and Avery Fisher the 3,000 in 11:40.49, the Wildcats were first in the distance medley behind Brooklyn Sernet, Gracey May, Payton Elman and Brynn Malo, going 4:44.42.
Malo was second in the 800 and Kesley Emick second in the long jump.
