Dodgers roll past Humboldt
Very few things surprise Andi Adams after nearly 30 years of coaching.
She will be the first to admit that her sixth-ranked (Class 4A) Dodger softball squad pleasantly caught her off guard a little earlier in the week with a come-from-behind victory in their season opener against No. 3 (5A) West Des Moines Valley. Despite having to think on their feet a little and get creative with the schedule on Friday, Fort Dodge showed no sign of a letdown — or letting up — in a 13-0, four-inning win over Humboldt.
Playing on Iowa Central’s turf field due to wet grounds on Diamond 1 at Rogers Sports Complex, the Dodgers (2-0 overall) capped a best-case scenario first week with another impressive performance. Adams’s team was originally scheduled for a make-up doubleheader at Sioux City North, but the twinbill was again washed out due to heavy rains in western Iowa earlier Friday.
The Wildcats weren’t scheduled to open their season until this Wednesday, but they agreed at the last minute to make the 15-minute trip as a late fill-in to face FDSH.
“We were kind of scrambling, and thankfully, Humboldt agreed to come down because we don’t want to end up short on games,” Adams said. “We appreciate their flexibility and making it work.
“I’m going to be completely honest: I wasn’t sure how Monday was going to go with Valley. We get down 4-2 early and it’s 5-2 late, but I started to notice both the toughness and resilience in how we hung around. And the energy was really high. Good things tend to happen if you stay in it and give yourself a chance, and that’s what happened.
“So then we have a lot of scheduling changes for the rest of the week, and again, you never really know how a group is going to respond. But they’ve been so steady and ready. And they’re having a lot of fun.”
Freshman Macy Wills homered for the second consecutive contest, and classmate Meg Marsh did the same to help anchor the Dodgers’ 10-hit attack. Half of those hits went for extra bases; junior Hope Alstott tripled, while Wills and freshman Emersyn Lara both doubled.
Wills, Marsh, junior Ellie Doster and senior Teryn Rippentrop all drove in a pair. Rippentrop was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases as well.
Eight different FDSH players recorded hits.
Sophomore Aubrey Alstott just missed a condensed no-hitter, allowing a single to Wildcat senior captain Abby Armitage. Alstott struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
The Dodgers plated 10 runs in the opening frame to support Alstott and never looked back.
“I just love how we’re working and focused on the task at hand,” Adams said. “We’re hitting up and down the lineup and doing things with a purpose. Preparation leads to confidence, and confidence (breeds) enjoyment. When you play the right way and you believe in each other, you are on the right track. We’re there so far, even though it’s very early.”
Fort Dodge has single varsity tilts at No. 7 (5A) Dallas Center-Grimes (Tuesday) and Boone (Thursday) this week.
