WAUKEE — Nik Moser knew what it would take for Fort Dodge to have a good day at the state qualifying time, and after the final race, he realized it had been a banner night for his boys track program.
The Dodgers secured three automatic qualifiers on the boys side, and three more at-large events will compete at state next week as well.
“Coming in, I thought we could potentially get up to six or seven in,” Moser said. “If we got four, I would’ve been happier than you could imagine.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had six state qualifiers into state — probably since (John) McBride was coaching (in 2021).”
Senior speedster Noah Daniel will again compete in two state events after winning the 200-meter dash and placing second in the 100-meter dash. Running into a 20-mile per hour wind, Daniel captured the 200 crown in a time of 22.13. He placed second in the 100 at 11.22.
“Noah had a great time in the 200, especially running into a 15 mile an hour head wind,” Moser said. “Noah is tired of qualifying and this time he wants to get into the finals and he’s capable of it.”
Jamarius Echols brought home gold as well, cruising to the 400-meter title in a time of 50.62.
“Jamarius ran great. He PR’d by a second,” Moser said. “He got out well and was even at 200 and pulled away at 100 and ran away with it, coasting at the end.
“He’s a kid that we’ve kept going and saying it’s coming, it’s coming. He’s in shape and running well.”
Fort Dodge’s 4×200 team, which is closing in on the school record, ran the 10th fastest time in the state at 1:28.65, placing third. The quartet was composed of Taevon Feeley, Will Jones, Sam Moser and Daniel.
“We’re about half a second away from the school record in the 4×2,” Moser said. “It’s been the same four since the Drake qualifier. They ran together as well at Cedar Falls, conference and (Thursday).
Also earning a state spot was the 4×100 after placing fifth. Moser, Feeley, Rochon and Daniel crossed the tape in 43.31, a season best.
The 4×800 also earned a spot, finishing sixth in a time of 8:22.48. Running for the Dodgers was Jayce Point, Cael Hansen, Simeon Roberts, and Joos Langkjaer.
The Dodger girls came away with six different fifth-place finishes and punched at least one state ticket.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of sophomore Addyson Friesth, freshman Ava Osorio, sophomore Charlotte DeJong and senior Maeleena Meyer took in a time of 1:10.9 and earned an at-large spot.
“Our shuttle hurdle performed well and got in,” said FDSH head coach Todd Constable. “We had a PR by a second and a half, which was great to see.
“We had a PR in the 4×100 as well.”
Friesth, Osorio, DeJong and Meyer were also fifth in the 4×200 (1:52.48). The quartet teamed up again in the sprint medley to take fifth in a time of 1:58.98.
Senior Ava Wessels was fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.29), and junior Ky’Mariana Mosley was fifth in the shot put (34.03).
The 4×400 team of DeJong, senior Teryn Rippentrop, sophomore Gabrielle Wirtz and sophomore Brooklyn Nelson were also fifth (4:30.66).
Osorio was eighth in the long jump at 16-3.
