Area athletes dominate at TLC girls track meet
POCAHONTAS — In a closely-contest team race at the Twin Lakes Conference girls meet, Sioux Central came out on top on Tuesday, just ahead of Alta-Aurelia and Pocahontas Area.
The Rebels scored 89 points, six ahead of the Warriors. The Indians were third at 81.
Emmetsburg and Southeast Valley finished tied for fourth with 74. East Sac County and Newell-Fonda each tallied 70 for sixth. GTRA had 63 and placed eighth. Manson Northwest Webster was ninth at 58.
Sioux Central vaulted to the top spot thanks to winning the final race of the night, the 4×400 relay.
Pocahontas Area’s Danica Dreith showed off her speed, placing first in the 100 and 100 hurdles. Teammate Halee Hauswirth won the shot put. Khloe Mefferd was a runner-up in the 200.
The Indians had a late rush of points, winning the 4×100 behind Dreith, Hauswirth, Natalie Sommerlot and Mefferd, in addition to placing second in the sprint medley and 4×200 relays.
Rachel Schany capped off her TLC career by winning four events for the E-Hawks. The senior star — a reigning state champion — won the 400, 800, high jump and long jump.
Southeast Valley’s Avrie Hanson claimed the 200 and was the anchor on the winning 4×200 for the Jaguars. Sage Lane, Mae Searcy and Madelyn Farley joined her on the relay. The same quartet also placed second in the 4×100.
Wendie Veit won the 400 hurdles and was second in the 400 for East Sac County, while Libbie Veit placed second in the 100 hurdles. The shuttle hurdle of Veit, Haley King, Madison Meister and Veit picked up gold.
Newell-Fonda’s Mareni Brabec won the 1,500 and closed out the winning 4×800 running alongside Ellie Sievers, Rylee Hogrefe and Elliott Hamilton.
Ava Moline won the discus and placed second in the shot put for MNW. Cougar teammate Bellah Aquino was second in the long jump.
For South Central Calhoun, Iris Melody won the 3,000. Mya Ridgely was second in the 100.
