Tritons fare well on the track in two locations

The Iowa Central track and field squad saw action in two different meets last weekend.

The Tritons sent athletes to both the Husker Spring Kick Off in Lincoln, Neb. and the Emporia State Midwest Classic in Kansas.

Abbigail Hutchinson qualified for nationals in the 1,500. Osmond Holt secured spots in the Decathlon and Eden Brouwers and Ella Homawoo in the Heptathlon.

“In Nebraska, the conditions were very tough being cold, windy and rainy; a midwest trifecta of bad weather,” said ICCC Director of Track and Field, Dee Brown. “While it is hard to get a lot accomplished on a day like that, it does do one thing real well. Poor conditions help you find the true colors of many athletes.

“We had a handful that really showed their grit, either having personal records or putting the effort in that on any other day would have been a huge PR. I saw Alivia Edens run the absolute best race of her life, completely locked in the entire way. Efforts like that make the trip well worth it.”

Akram Mouaki recorded the fourth-best shot put throw in school history, while Hutchinson placed her name fifth in the 1,500 and Holt 10th in the Decathlon.

“We had a couple of goals at the multi this weekend,” ICCC head coach Anne Cleary said. “For some, it was to qualify for the national meet, and for others it was to complete their first outdoor multi.

“What’s awesome about our team is that kids with these two very different goals come together and help each other.”

Iowa Central heads to El Dorado, Kan. for the Grizzly Gold Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
