Triton softball squad rallies twice to sweep
Twice on Wednesday, the 21st-ranked Iowa Central softball team found themselves facing a deficit against Iowa Lakes.
And in both games, the Tritons rallied, sweeping the Lakers at Rogers Park.
Scores were 3-2 and 10-5.
Following a Monday split with Northeast Iowa at home, the focus for Iowa Central (27-9 overall, 12-6 in the league) was to get back on track.
“This conference is a grind each time we step on the diamond,” ICCC head coach Bo Tjebben said. “Iowa Lakes just swept NIACC on Tuesday, so they were coming in with a lot of momentum.
“We were down early, but these girls never get rattled. They’ve been down this year and came back, so they have that mental toughness to do it. Plus, the energy in our dugout was just incredible like it has been all season.”
Iowa Lakes (26-14, 9-11) erased a Jersey Hawf leadoff homer in the opening game, taking a 2-1 advantage before Josephine Moore blasted a two-run shot in the fourth to put the Tritons ahead for good.
Hawf and Kyra Kain both finished with two hits, as Hawf drove in three and scored a run. Fort Dodge Senior High grad Cadence Touney and Southeast Valley standout Ellie Nolte both added a hit.
Jillian French earned the win with six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Lakers went up 5-0 before Iowa Central scored 10 unanswered, including back-to-back innings with four runs each in the third and fourth.
Moore finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, Natalie Rasmussen and Kain both had two hits, with Rasmussen scoring three times. Hawf had two runs and an RBI, Touney and Nolte each drove in a run, and Jozie Kerr had a pair of RBI.
Former Eagle Grove standout Addyson Jeske added a hit.
Jaidan Abel came on in relief and struck out seven over five-plus, allowing just four hits and no earned runs.
“We’ve got three girls at the top (Rasmussen, Hawf and Kain) all hitting over .400,” Tjebben said. “We’ve got other girls who can drag bunt and do the little things we need to score. Being able to rely on any of the bats in our lineup to contribute makes us dangerous.
“We’ve worked a lot on hitting this season and that is paying off for us.”
The Tritons are right back in action with a doubleheader vs. Ellsworth on Thursday starting at 2 p.m., followed by a trip to Farley on Saturday for a rematch with Northeast Iowa before two more vs. Ellsworth in Iowa Falls on Sunday.
