Kris Graewin was thrilled to see his Iowa Central men’s and women’s golf teams compete at a high-level over the weekend, with the end result being three championships.
The Tritons swept the men’s team and individual titles while also winning the women’s individual crown at the Iowa Central Spring Invitational held at the Fort Dodge Country Club.
“It was a great weekend for us,” Graewin said. “We had a loaded field this year, and to be able to play our best golf of the season in a full 36-hole (event) was really good to see.”
Behind Peyton Walker’s 36-hole total of 3-under par 139, the Tritons bested Southeast by two strokes and DMACC by four. Walker finished atop the individual leaderboard, with teammate Francis Lockwood taking third and Eric Zuniga placing seventh.
Filip Jarheden was 20th and former Webster City standout Cael Nixon placed 36th.
“Peyton has taken his game to the next level this year and (Saturday) was a testament to his hard work,” Graewin said. “A score of 68 with zero bogeys was incredibly impressive.
“The team was able to pull off the win in part because Francis birdied four of his last six holes. He showed again why he is one of the best in the country.”
Walker followed up his opening round even-par with a 3-under on Saturday, recording three birdies and 15 pars. He tallied four birdies on Friday.
Okira Quintero won the women’s individual title by six strokes, as teammates Syeda Laiba Shah and Azul Orantes tied for eighth. Simpson won the team title by two shots over Briar Cliff.
Quintero had three birdies, with two coming in the second round. She also had 10 pars over the final 18 holes.
“Okira has been putting in a ton of work on her game and I was extremely impressed with her dominant performance,” Graewin said. “She limited her mistakes and was able to play great. Azul and Laiba both had great weekend and we’re looking forward to building off this tournament.”
The Iowa Central men’s B squad took ninth, led by August Nord’s 23rd-place individual effort. The C group was 15th, led by Andrew Hunt.
