SIOUX CENTER — Macy Sievers put the final touches on an incredible college career with Dordt University recently.
Sievers, a Newell-Fonda graduate, was named the NAIA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. She was also placed on the All-American first team for a third straight year.
This past winter, the Defenders reached the NAIA national championship game, placing second to Marian. Sievers averaged almost 17 points with 9.4 assists, eight rebounds and three steals per game.
During her four-year run at Dordt, Sievers played in all 145 games, making 110 starts during that time. The Defenders went 134-11 with her in the lineup, as she scored 1,933 career points with 1,078 assists, 993 rebounds and 329 steals.
Her assist total places her No. 1 all-time in NAIA women’s basketball history. She is also first in school history in steals, second in points scored and made field goals, and third in rebounds and made 3-pointers.
“Obviously being player of the year again is awesome but I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my teammates and coaches,” Sievers said. “Each day they pushed me to get better. It wasn’t always easy, but it was so worth it.
“Being an All-American again is another awesome feeling but it’s just a testament to this program here at Dordt. It’s truly special; they push you to reach new limits in all areas of life. I wouldn’t be the player I am today without them. At Dordt, I was able to grow in so many ways and being a part of this program was a huge blessing. There are so many lessons I learned that I can take with me for the rest of life.”
Sievers had three triple-doubles in the NAIA Tournament this past season. She played all 40 minutes of the title game, scoring 15 points with 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Dordt entered this season as the two-time defending NAIA national champions, also reaching the round of 16 with Sievers during her freshman season.
At Newell-Fonda, Sievers scored 1,338 points, earning all-state honors in basketball, volleyball and softball. She helped the Mustangs win three state basketball championships.
