FD’s Daniel wins 100, 4×100 qualifies for Drake at Duncan
DES MOINES — In two weeks, some of the state’s best track athletes will showcase their talents on the biggest stage at the Drake Relays.
Fort Dodge senior Noah Daniel showed Saturday that he’s one of the top sprinters in the state.
Daniel claimed 100-meter dash gold at the Jim Duncan Invitational on the famed Blue Oval.
“We are still trying to get as many events into the Drake Relays as possible,” FDSH head coach Nik Moser said. “Noah put in a good time going into a little bit of a head wind.
“A couple of kids that he beat (Saturday) have already had a 10.6 this season.
“He was in heat three and five was the fastest. He came into the meet running the 100 only once this season in the heat.”
The Dodger senior crossed the tape in 11.14 out of the slow heat to claim top honors.
“Drake is two weeks away and I think Noah can run even faster,” Moser said. “He’s healthy again and getting better as the season goes on.”
The Fort Dodge 4×100 relay has earned a Drake Relays spot, taking eighth here on Saturday in a time of 43.72 behind junior Sam Moser, senior Taevon Felley, junior Kyree Rochon and Daniel.
“It was a really solid effort from the 4×1,” Moser said. “That was the first time those four have run together.”
The 4×200 quartet of junior Jamarius Echols, Feeley, Moser and Daniel went 1:31.48 and are currently at the 30th-best time after dropping three seconds. They are 0.5 seconds away from a Drake bid.
“We are getting closer with the 4×2,” Moser said. “They ran that time with a bad exchange and with room to improve. They have a legitimate shot to make it.”
The Dodger 4×800 group placed 15th behind junior Cael Hansen, senior Simeon Roberts, sophomore Joos Langkjaer and junior Jayce Point. They finished in 8:36, dropping their time as well.
The distance medley is also close to a Drake berth, placing 11th with a time of 3:43 behind Moser, Daniel, Echols and Point.
“We ran well in the distance medley,” Moser said. “We improved and we just need to get our best 800 and 400 at the same time.”
The 4×400 quartet of Echols, Moser, Roberts and Point crossed the tape in a time of 3:39.81 for 13th place.
Hansen was 29th in the 800 with a time of 2:07.80.
The Dodgers are back in acton on Monday when they host the Dodger Relays.
