Dodger girls rout Hoover on the road
DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls soccer team gave head coach G Myers an early present on Monday night.
The night before her birthday, Myers saw her club come together in an 8-2 rout of Des Moines Hoover on the road.
“Our offense really turned it on and did the things I know they can do,” Myers said. “They kept the energy up and didn’t let up.”
The Dodgers (1-1 overall) cruised on a cold and blustery night. With temperatures near the freezing mark, both teams braved the cold and combined for 10 goals.
“We had a couple of injuries, but our girls stepped up,” Myers said. “It was a rough night weather-wise for both teams. We gave up one half of the junior varsity game, and I believe that helped both teams as we both had a couple of two-way players.”
The eight goals were the most in a game for the Dodgers since beating Waterloo East 9-0 in 2023. Senior captain Abby Hernandez had a hat trick for FDSH, which led 4-1 at the half.
Sophomore Reese Trimble added two goals, while senior Elly Martinez, junior Bella Lee and sophomore Laila Grantham contributed one goal each.
“The unspoken player of the night was Zoey (Balm) on offense,” Myers said. “She played the entire game and took the brunt of most of their fouls.
“I have to hand it to her. Even though she didn’t get into the scoring column, Zoey played her butt off and really pushed it.”
The FDSH defense came up strong as well, giving up one goal in each half.
“On defense, Emily (Hauswirth) stepped up,” Myers said. “She was coming off a sprain and really took care of it over the weekend and played the entire game.”
The Fort Dodge junior varsity team remained unbeaten on the season with their second victory, beating Hoover 1-0. Yoseline Martin Diaz had hte lone goal.
The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they host Ames.
