Dodger boys earn victory
STORM LAKE — Bryson Hansel and Mateo Ron each scored goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation to lift the Fort Dodge boys soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Storm Lake here Tuesday night.
Scoreless at the half, the Dodgers fell behind 1-0 with 20 minutes go play before Hansel and Ron secured the comeback.
“At the end of the day, all that matters is seeing how excited these kids were to walk off that field with a victory,” FDSH head coach Nic Huse said. “It hasn’t been an easy start to this season, but they have never quit and never complained. They have came to practice each day working to get better and I am so thrilled for them to celebrate this performance.”
Huse, a former Dodger soccer and swimming standout, is in his first season leading the program.
“It’s obviously exciting to get that first victory as a head coach, but all that matters is these kids getting to experience this win,” Huse said. “Hopefully, we can build off this and continue to grow and have more success this year and in the future.”
Alex Berger allowed just the one goal in net during the match, saving countless other attempts by the Tornadoes.
“Alex did a tremendous job and our defense played as well as they have all season long,” Huse said. “We received several great efforts from everybody that came out on the pitch.”
Storm Lake, winless on the year, won eight games last year and had won at least 10 matches every season from 2012-2022.
The goals by Hansel and Ron were the first of the season for both players.
