IOWA CITY — Tory Bennett and Mariah Myers both hit home runs, but it wasn’t enough to get Iowa past rival Iowa State on the softball diamond here on Wednesday.
The Cyclones scored two runs in the seventh to secure a 9-7 victory over the Hawkeyes from Pearl Field.
Bennett, a 2022 graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High, hit a two-RBI homer in the third with two outs, helping cut into a 4-0 deficit for Iowa (21-17 overall). The senior finished with three RBI to lead the Hawkeyes.
Bennett, a senior, has hit eight home runs this season. She has been a staple in the lineup for Iowa since arriving after an all-state career with the Dodgers, hitting a career-best .307 so far this season with 18 extra-base hits and 25 driven in.
She had just one home run coming into the season as a Hawkeye, and has already tied her high mark for RBI.
Myers, a 2025 St. Edmond grad, went deep in the fourth for her fifth homer of the season. She finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, recording five putouts from first base.
The freshman is hitting .281 with nine extra-base hits and 13 RBI in 35 games, making 31 starts.
Iowa State’s Kadence Shepherd, Tatum Johnson and Reagan Bartholomew all hit home runs, including a solo shot by Bartholomew in the seventh to break the tie. Lauren Schurman earned the win, recording the final 13 outs of the game in relief.
The Hawkeyes host Georgia Tech on Friday while the Cyclones welcome No. 19 Oklahoma State that same day.
