The Fort Dodge girls soccer team broke a four-game losing skid with a win inside Dodger Stadium on Tuesday.
FDSH (2-5 overall) picked up a 2-1 victory over Des Moines North (1-4-1).
“The game was a lot more than the two goals scored,” said Dodger head coach G Myers. “We had a lot of players that gave it their all. Bella (Lee) did really well, as well as Evie (Heldorfer) and Emily (Hauswirth).
“Abby (Hernandez) did a great job of keeping the ball on the attack and picking up loose balls. A lot of girls did solid work behind the scenes to get the win.”
Junior Addie Lentsch scored her third goal of the season to give Fort Dodge a 1-0 lead that they took into halftime. Sophomore Laila Grantham made it 2-0 in the second half on a cross from Lee.
“We worked with moving the ball and getting our numbers up,” Myers said. “We had three girls ready to score.
“It helped the defense get some work with more attackers, and they were more prepared.”
The Polar Bears only goal came on a penalty kick late in the contest with a minute remaining.
“The girls have it in them this year, showing spurts that they can consistently compete,” Myers said. “We’re getting there.
“We’ve had some games where we should have won. They’ve shown their competitiveness, and it’s beautiful to watch when you see it.”
The Fort Dodge junior varsity (3-3) won 2-0. Chelsea Ramos scored both goals for the Dodgers. Ella Johnson had a clean sheet as the keeper.
Fort Dodge is back in action on Friday at Marshalltown.
