Area athletes shine at MNW’s Jepson Relays

MANSON — A number of area squads competed in the Mike Jepson Relays here Tuesday night.

St. Edmond scored a pair of relay victories, winning the sprint medley and distance medley relays.

Carroll finished first overall ahead of Southeast Valley, as the host Cougars were third. Eagle Grove, East Sac County, South Central Calhoun, Pocahontas Area and the Gaels rounded out the final standings.

Jack McElroy, on the track for the first time while also competing on the Gael golf team this spring, was part of both winning relays along with Grant Galles and Aaron Hindt.

McElroy ran the anchor on the sprint medley, catching a runner from Carroll for the title in 1:42.71. Galles, Gordon Seeden, Hindt and McElroy comprised that unit, as Galles, McElroy, Hindt and Anthony Valles won the distance medley in 3:47.23.

McElroy was also fifth in the high jump, competing in the event for the first time and clearing 5-6.

“Jack just had a great night,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “He really ran a great anchor in the sprint medley and is having a strong season for us.

“Anthony also caught a kid coming down the stretch to win the distance medley. I think we had a pretty good night despite having just 10 kids compete.”

Valles was also second in the 800. The 4×400 of McElroy, Galles, Valles and Hindt placed third.

St. Edmond’s Aidan Reel was eighth in the 1,600, taking five seconds off his previous best.

Southeast Valley saw wins from Kayden Showers in the 100 (11.49), Colin Johnson in the 400 hurdles (55.41), the shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.74) and the 4×200 relay (1:33.61). The Jaguars placed second in the 4×100 and 4×400, along with Alex Burger’s silver in the 110 hurdles.

For Manson Northwest Webster, Cole Judisch was first in both the 200 (23.13) and 400 (51.91), as was Jack Hoeppner in the 800 (2:09.63).

The Cougars prevailed in the 4×800 relay in 8:38.43 and the 4×400 in 3:33.20. Mason Anderson (high jump) and Thatcher Oswald (400 hurdles) both took second.

Adam Marsh won the discus with a throw of 131-6 for Pocahontas Area, who had Karson Welander finish second in the long jump.

For South Central Calhoun, Jace Pedersen was the runner-up in both the shot put and the discus.

Riley Aragon won the 1,600 (4:51.93) and the 3,200 (10:19.48) for East Sac County, as Eagle Grove’s Leelan Spencer (100) and Anthony Vasquez (400) both grabbed second.

The Gaels head to Hampton for a co-ed meet on Friday.
