67th annual Dodger Relays up next
The Fort Dodge boys track teams are counting the opportunities for a chance to reach some of their goals.
The Dodgers will get three more shots to earn spots at the Drake Relays, starting Monday at the 67th annual Dodger Relays. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. on the J.H. Nitzke track inside Dodger Stadium.
“It looks like good weather, with (temperatures) in the 80s even though it might be windy again,” said FDSH head coach Nik Moser. “It will be nice to run in some heat. It’s been a weird season so far, and our main focus is trying to take as many events as we can to the Drake Relays.
“We have a chance at home to compete against some good competition.”
The Dodgers will be joined by St. Edmond, Humboldt, Eagle Grove, Waukee Northwest, Mason City, Dallas Center-Grimes, and Marshalltown.
Fort Dodge has already earned a spot at Drake with the 4×100 relay team, and senior Noah Daniel has punched his 100-meter dash ticket.
“I’m not sure if we will load everything (on Monday), but we’re going to go hard in the distance medley and improve our 4×100. So will Noah in the 100,” Moser said. “It should be a great night to run.
“Dallas Center-Grimes is a new team coming this year, along with Marshalltown and Mason City. Waukee Northwest should bring a good lineup here, because they’ve only run a couple of times so far this year.”
Including the Dodger Relays, Fort Dodge will compete at Johnston on Tuesday and Cedar Falls on Thursday in a busy week — weather permitting.
Last season at the Dodger Relays, Daniel was the 100 champion. FDSH had five runner-up showings and two third-place performances.
Fort Dodge was fourth in the team standings at 105 points.
“The Dodger Relays are pieced together so well,” Moser said. “We run at a lot of places, but no meet goes as smoothly as this.
“The community, school district and people surrounding it take a lot of pride in it, and we are very appreciative of it as a program.”
Last season, the Gaels finished fifth with 52 points. St. Edmond had four first-place finishes.
Junior Aaron Hindt won the 200-meter dash. Senior Anthony Valles was the 800 champion.
St. Edmond claimed gold in the distance medley and the 4×400.
