COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Iowa Central wrestling program walked away from the NJCAA National Tournament with three individual champions, 13 other medalists and a pair of third-place team finishes.

Muhammad Bilal and Jarrel Miller became the 58th and 59th champions all-time for the Triton men, while Erica Pastoriza won the fourth title for the Iowa Central women.

“Muhammad and Jarrel did what they went (to nationals) to accomplish,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “They planned for it physically and mentally, then they went out and got the job done. It was a matter of executing at the level they needed to.

“Overall, we didn’t do as well as we could have. But we also dealt with a lot of injury adversity that stopped us from having a complete lineup at full strength. That happens sometimes, unfortunately. I don’t like to say something was ‘good luck’ or ‘bad luck,’ but we definitely faced some issues beyond our control.”

In the 125-pound final, Bilal topped Colt Collett of Cowley, 7-2. Neither Bilal or Collett was ranked, as Bilal took out No. 1 Jack Guerrero in the semifinals with a major decision, 13-5. He also had two technical falls and another major decision during the tourney.

Miller lived up to his top ranking at 184, besting No. 3 Banks Love of Western Wyoming, 16-9. He earned a 12-3 major decision in the semis over Seth Martin of North Idaho and also had three falls in three matches on Friday.

Damarcus Powe was third at 174 pounds, Che Jenkins (141) and Zaman Anwar (285) were each fourth, and Chancery Deane took eighth.

Pastoriza locked up her title at 103 pounds with a 5-0 victory over Vivian Hayes of Murray State in the finals. Ranked second, Pastoriza topped No. 6 Alicia Hansen of Snow in the semis before besting Hayes, who was unranked.

“We’re very proud of Erica,” ICCC women’s coach Zak Hensley said. “She has been consistent, hungry and coachable all season. She is as tough as they come, and all of her hard work paid off.”

Triton Delise Villa, the defending 145-pound champ from a year ago, finished second after falling to Iowa Western’s Ayana Fletcher.

Annabelle Petsinger was third at 131, defeating teammate Ashlee Farrier for bronze. Harmoni Callins (207) was also fourth, as Asia Jahangir (125) finished fifth.

Iowa Central’s Allie Grow grabbed sixth at 160 pounds, with Damiyah Smith (110), Aneth Campos (117) and Destiny Krum (138) all placing seventh.

“The team wrestled well,” Hensley said. “It hurts to fall short, but we are proud of every athletewho put everything on the line and gave it all they had.”

Indian Hills once again swept the team titles, as the men rallied past Western Wyoming to defend while the women won for the fourth consecutive season.
