Six Tritons in semifinals
COUNCIL BLUFFS — Six Iowa Central wrestlers will compete here Saturday in the semifinals of the NJCAA National Championships.
Muhammad Bilal, Damarcus Powe, Jarrel Miller and Zaman Anwar stayed alive for individual titles for the Triton men while Erica Pastoriza and Delise Villa did the same for the Iowa Central women.
In the team standings, the Triton men currently sit fourth overall, with the women in third place.
Wrestling continues from the Mid-America Center with the semis and consolation placements matches starting at 9:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies for the championship finals begin at 5:30 p.m.
Atop the men’s standings sits Western Wyoming, who has scored 136.5 and has seven in the semifinals. Indian Hills, the defending champs, are second with 125.5 and also have seven in the semis. Clackamas is third at 101.5, Iowa Central has 100 and Southeast is fifth with 99.
Indian Hills, the three-time defending champions, lead the women’s standings with 150.5 points. Southeast is second with 122, as the Tritons are a point back. Umpqua is fourth and Murray State fifth.
Bilal, unranked at 125 pounds, scored a pair of technical falls and a major decision to earn his shot against No. 1 Jack Guerrero of Muskegon. Powe, the No. 3 ranked 174-pounder, gets top-ranked Cinsere Clark of Indian Hills in the semis after recording a fall, a technical fall and a decision.
Miller, No. 1 at 184, earned three falls in three matches — with two of those coming in the opening period — to advance to the final four where he will meet fifth-ranked Seth Martin of North Idaho. Anwar, the top-ranked heavyweight, faces off with No. 4 Ira Jenkins of Southeast after he had two pins and a technical fall.
Pastoriza, ranked second at 103 pounds, had both of her matches end in technical superiority and will face No. 6 Alicia Hansen of Snow in the semis. Villa, the defending 145-pound champion, scored a fall and a technical superiority to advance to a showdown with Hansen’s teammate, No. 3 Isabelle Morgan.
Villa was named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament a year ago.
Che Jenkins fell in the quarters on the men’s side while Damiyah Smith, Aneth Campos, Jeream Estabilio, Ashlee Farrier, Annabelle Petsinger, Destiny Krum, Valerie Hamilton, Allie Grow, Lucy Kohnen and Harmoni Callins all lost in that round in the women’s brackets.
The Iowa Central men have two who will place on the consolation side while the women have eight there in medal matches.
