It didn’t take long for the postseason accolades to start rolling in again for the Newell-Fonda and Bishop Garrigan girls basketball teams.
Five players from last Saturday night’s Class 1A championship game earned all-state honors, the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association and Iowa Basketball Coaches Association announced this week.
Mustang sophomore Ellie Sievers was joined by freshman teammate Quinn Sievers on the first squad, as was Bishop Garrigan junior post Graclyn Eastman. Emmetsburg senior Rachel Schany (2A) and North Union junior Ainsley Ulrich (1A) also earned first team all-state status for their efforts in 2025-26.
Fellow Golden Bear players Sacha Alesch and Emmi Bartolo, both seniors, joined Eastman on the honor roll as second-team recipients.
Newell-Fonda (25-2 overall) defeated Bishop Garrigan (24-3) by a 64-56 count in the 1A title tilt. Ellie Sievers was the tournament’s most valuable player, with Quinn Sievers, Eastman and Bartolo landing on the all-tourney squad in Des Moines.
Ellie Sievers was a second team all-stater a year ago. Eastman is a repeat first teamer.
Ulrich (second), Schany (third), Bartolo (third) and Alesch (third) were tabbed all-state in 2024-25 as well.
Ellie Sievers averaged 15.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Mustangs this season. She shot 49 percent from the field and added over two steals and two assists per contest.
Quinn Sievers, a second cousin once removed to Ellie, came off the bench to score at an 11.7-point clip. She also contributed 4.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and nearly three steals per game.
Eastman was dominant on the low block, averaging 17.6 points and 9.5 rebounds for the Golden Bears. She also tallied over three steals and three blocks per contest.
Schany, a state track champion for the E-Hawks, led Emmetsburg to state with a 21.0-point and 8.4-rebound average, also checking in defensively at 2.8 steals. The E-Hawks (23-3) dethroned Newell-Fonda atop the Twin Lakes Conference, ending the Mustangs’ 100-game league win streak in the process in January.
Ulrich powered North Union at 20.3 points and 5.2 rebounds. The Warriors were 15-9 and reached a regional final in 1A.
Alesch (13.6 points) and Bartolo (9.8 points, 5.2 assists) were veteran anchors for the Golden Bears in their run to the 1A final.
Jenica Lewis of Johnston was named the 2026 Miss Iowa Basketball.
