Lursen wins 400 for Gaels
WAVERLY — The spring track and field season is still in its infant stages, but St. Edmond senior Anna Lursen appears to already be in state form.
Lursen, a University of South Dakota commit, won the 400-meter run here Tuesday night at the Wartburg Invitational. She clocked a winning time of 59.96, which places her in the Top-25 this year in Iowa, as she bested runner-up Molly Maurer of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura by nearly two full seconds.
The gold-medal performance by Lursen was part of a strong night of competing by the Gaels, who wrapped up their indoor season.
“It was good for Anna to go sub-60,” SEHS girls head coach CJ Tracy said. “That’s an excellent time on a 200 track.
“It was a good first meet. We saw many things to be proud of and also things we will get better at as the season moves along.”
Aaron Hindt was second in the 200, Grace Schlegel placed fifth in the 1,500 and Rihanna Myers was sixth in the shot put. Anthony Valles turned in a pair of Top-7 finishes, placing sixth in the 800 and seventh in the 1,600.
Pocahontas Area’s Halee Hauswirth won the shot put with a throw of 38-7.25.
Schlegel had a time of 5;25.96, as she was the highest-placing freshman in the race, which was won by Mason City senior Brogan Evans. Myers had her best throw on her fourth attempt, as she also cleared 31 feet on three other throws.
The 4×400 capped off the night by placing sixth in 4:27.86, as Schlegel, Ava Bradley, Brianna Saathoff and Lursen comprised the quartet.
Lily Eslick was 14th in the 3,000 and placed 24th in the 1,500, Valles was 19th in the 800 and the 4×800 relay of Schlegel, Alex Leiting, Valles and Lursen placed 11th.
Valles went 2:13.14 in the 800 after clocking a time of 5:02.26 in the 1,600. He came out of the first heat of the 800, as the first five finishers were all in the fourth heat.
Valles did the same in the 1,600, running in the first heat while the Top-6 were all in the third.
Grant Galles placed 11th in the 200, Erik Larson was 13th in the 3,200 and 22nd in the 1,600, and Gordon Seeden was 19th in the 3,200.
“Aaron had a really good race,” SEHS boys head coach Mike Szalat said. “It’s exciting to see what he can do the rest of the season. Grant, for having one practice, really had a great race and was just a second off. Anthony also had a good night.
“But the thing I’m most excited for is the way these guys get along together. It’s a lot of seniors and freshmen for the most part, but they really enjoyed each other and that makes it fun as a coach.”
Pocahontas Area was fifth in the girls 4×400, with Karson Welander seventh in the long jump and Adam Marsh seventh in the shot put. The top finish for Eagle Grove came from the boys 4×800, as they placed seventh.
Logan Torsell of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows was ninth in the 800.
St. Edmond opens the outdoor season on Monday when they head to Earlham for a coed meet.
