Triton women dominate Southwestern, 71-42
The Iowa Central women stayed perfect in the early stages of this month, dominating Southwestern here Saturday inside Hodges Fieldhouse by a final score of 71-42.
A 21-9 run in the fourth helped the Tritons (19-6 overall, 12-5 in the ICCAC) put the Spartans (4-21, 0-17) away. Trista Ohlmeier led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Shakani Murray and Amelia Echternkamp both scored 13 in the victory, with Murray adding seven assists. Izzy Bassett recorded six points, 10 rebounds and three steals, with Sharon Greek adding six points, seven rebounds and two steals.
For Southwestern, Jaide McPhee had 14 points.
“I thought we did a really good job of playing unselfish,” ICCC head coach Graham McFall said. “We shared the ball well, finding our open shooters and post players.”
Iowa Central had 18 assists on 30 made field goals while holding a 46-29 advantage on the glass. That included a plus-nine edge on offensive rebounds.
“We were able to have success running the floor in tradition,” McFall said, “and getting the ball inside where we had the advantage.”
The Tritons led by as many as 30 and were plus-32 on points in the paint and plus-12 on points off turnovers vs. the Spartans.
Up next for Iowa Central is a rematch with No. 7 Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday. The Eagles won the first meeting in overtime, 65-59.
