MASON CITY — The second-ranked Iowa Central men’s wrestling team scored a runner-up finish here Sunday at the NJCAA North Central District Championship.
No. 1 Indian Hills finished with 179 points for gold — four points ahead of the Tritons. It was the second straight district crown for the Warriors.
Iowa Western was third, followed by NIACC, Iowa Lakes, Hawkeye, Ellsworth and Southeastern.
Iowa Central did finish with five individual league champs to four by Indian Hills. Muhammad Bilal, Tegan Sherk, Kaden King, Damarcus Powe and Jarrel Miller were all gold medalists.
“We did what we needed to do,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “We got everyone through to nationals, which was the first goal. I thought we did a good job of finishing most of our matches strong.”
For King, it was his second crown, as he was one of four repeat winners. Gavyn Whitehead, Naasir Edmonds and Shehab Mohamed of Indian Hills also became back-to-back champs.
In the final match of the meet, Edmonds bested Zaman Anwar from Iowa Central for the heavyweight title, which helped push the Warriors past the Tritons.
Anwar, Che Jenkins and Chancery Deane were runner-ups for Iowa Central. Matthew Roche and Umair Ahmad also advanced to nationals, giving the Tritons qualifiers at all 10 weight classes.
The NJCAA National Tournament is set for March 6-7 in Council Bluffs.
