CORALVILLE — Humboldt’s Danica Diedrick is using last year’s state tournament as motivation and a boiling point.
The Wildcat junior will now compete in her third straight state trip and past experience has been what is driving her.
Last year Diedrick went 1-2 and that has been brewing into a boiling point.
“After losing last year, it gave me a huge chip on my shoulder,” Diedrick said. “I was able to use it as fuel and motivation to keep working toward my goal of being on the podium.”
In her junior season Diedrick (170) has gone 34-3, coupled with a 42-win campaign a year ago. She surpassed the 100-win plateau and is 108-30 heading into the state tournament.
“Being at state is just a way for me to show off all of my work that I put in this season,” Diedrick said. “I am super proud of myself for qualifying.”
Diedrick enters the state field as the fourth-seed. She’ll face Megyn Hollingsworth (42-8) of BCLUW in the opener.
“Danica has been focused all year on the goal of not just making it back, but making an impact,” said Humboldt head coach Andy Newell.
Junior Laina Dettman (120) will compete in her first tournament. Dettman (34-8) drew the 12th-seed. She’ll compete against No. 5 Hannah Brandhorst (44-4) of Woodward-Granger.
“Laina worked hard all year coming off an injury at regionals last year,” Newell said. “She had the goal of getting here and proving she belongs.
“She works hard day in and day out. She definitely earned this.”
The Class 1A state tournament will begin on Thursday at 10 a.m. and run until 2:30 p.m.
Session 3 of 1A will be Friday from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., and the finals will run from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
