SWEET SWEEP

Freshman Eden Horn made sure there would be no comeback by the Humboldt girls here Monday night.

Horn scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter for St. Edmond as the Gaels earned their first season sweep over the Wildcats since the 2014-15 season with a 63-34 victory.

St. Edmond (13-4 overall, 8-3 in the North Central Conference) has now won three in a row and eight of nine ahead of the Class 1A postseason pairings, which are scheduled to be released later this week.

Horn finished with a game-high 22 points, adding 16 rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal. Abby Huss buried four 3-pointers and had 13 points, while Chloe Palmer and Sophia Schlienz combined for 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Anna Lursen added four points, six rebounds, four steals and a block.

For Humboldt (7-10, 3-8), Jada VandeWalle and Olivia Illg both scored eight. The Wildcats were playing without leading scorer Ava Fischer, as the senior suffered an injury vs. Clear Lake last week.

“I thought we played hard and executed for the most part,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “We knew Humboldt would be a physical matchup for us, so we tried to prepare the girls as best we could.

“We defended well and did a good job of rebounding the basketball.”

St. Edmond held a plus-14 edge on the glass and buried six triples as a team. They never trailed, scoring the first 11 points of the game and building an early 16-point cushion.

In the second quarter, the Gaels committed just one turnover and outscored the Wildcats, 16-5, as Schlienz and Huss each sank a 3-pointer while Palmer was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

The game featured 45 total fouls and 54 free throws attempted.

After dropping 13 straight to Humboldt, St. Edmond has now won two in a row, adding to a 60-51 road win earlier this year.

“It is a credit to these girls with all of the things we are accomplishing for the first time in a long time here,” Tracy said. “They are the ones who have put in the work and have continued to lay the foundation for the future.”

The Gaels remain at home twice more this week, hosting Pocahontas Area on Thursday and Clear Lake on Friday. Humboldt welcomes in Iowa Falls-Alden Friday night and heads to Charles City Saturday.
