Strong start fuels Triton women

The Iowa Central women’s basketball team burst out of the gate on Wednesday night, winning their fifth contest in the last six games.

The Tritons (18-6 overall, 11-5 in the ICCAC) started on a 21-8 run and never looked back, defeating Northeast (14-8, 9-7) by a final of 66-48 inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

“It was a great bounce back after a tough Saturday performance,” said ICCC head coach Graham McFall. “We were happy with our offensive execution, I thought we shared the ball really well.

“Shakani Murray lead the way for us, scoring it all three levels. Defensively we did great, dominating the glass with 47 rebounds — including a 13-point 16-rebound performance from Trista Ohlmeier. Great overall team win.”

At halftime, Iowa Central had built a 35-24 lead. The Tritons then extended that advantage by the end of third period to 55-37.

Iowa Central outrebounded the Hawks 47-29.

Northeast held the advantage at the free throw line, going 16-for-21, while Iowa Central was 7 of 12. The Cardinals were only 2-for-22 from three-point range, though.

Murray led the Tritons with 23 points. She was 9 of 17 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the arc.

Murray also had seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

After Ohlmeier, Ashlin Jacobsen was also in double figures with 13.

Northeast was led by Aaliyah Jones (14 points) and Lexi Wiebelhaus (13).

The Tritons are back in action on Saturday when they host Southwestern at 1 p.m.
