Six 1A wrestlers from area advance on winner’s side

DES MOINES — Six Messenger-area wrestlers moved into the quarterfinals at state wrestling here on Thursday in Class 1A, with all six scoring falls in their lone matches.
West Bend-Mallard’s Hunter Lester and Mason Knapp, South Central Calhoun’s Karson Wuebker and Jace Pedersen, and Emmetsburg’s Ryan Wirtz and Nick Saxton secured spots on the winner’s side inside Casey’s Center on Friday.
Wrestling on Friday begins at 9 a.m. with quarters, followed by consolation matches. The semifinals and more consolations take place Friday night.
It was a quick session for the Wolverines, as their lone qualifiers — Lester and Knapp — dominated.
Lester moved to 33-1 on the year with a fall over Kaleb Gordon of Jesup in 5:45 at 106 pounds, with Knapp pushing his mark to 33-8 when he pinned Kasen Lopez from West Sioux in 3:04.
Up next for Lester will be Lincoln Huck from Nashua-Plainfield. Knapp, a three-time qualifier, gets top-seed Jensen Dyer out of Martensdale-St. Marys.
Wuebker needed just 59 seconds to finish Twin Lakes Conference rival Keaton Wittrock of Manson Northwest Webster at 106 pounds, improving to 57-2 this season. Wuebker, the No. 2 seed who placed fifth as a freshman last year, now faces Hunter Hussing of Missouri Valley.
Pedersen, meanwhile, secured his state victory when he stuck Reese Stocks from Hinton at heavyweight in 5:41. He is now 51-6 this season and takes on Keegan Long of Earlham in the quarters.
Witz, the top seed at 190 pounds, got the better of Dawson Boileau out of Iowa City Regina with a fall in 2:56 while Saxton pinned Brady Shannon from Northeast at heavyweight in 1:54.
Awaiting Wirtz in the quarters will be Lincoln Blickenderfer of Central Springs, as Saxton, the No. 2 seed, tangles with Teagan Dybevik of Colfax-Mingo.
Manson NW
Mason Anderson secured a major decision to keep his hopes of a state medal going into Friday, downing Gabriel Iriarte of Nashua-Plainfield. He earned a fall in 3:29 over Andrew Roling from Beckman to open his 190-pound tournament before falling to Blake Myrtue from Ridge View.
Both Keaton Wittrock and Hunter Newman suffered consolation-round losses, ending their trip. Wittrock downed Brody Hosek of Belle Plaine in his opener, 10-3, but was pinned by South Central Calhoun’s Karson Wuebker and lost to Kyler Happel of Lisbon.
Newman had the same path, earning a fall over Burke Shane of Riceville in 3:11 before losing to Ryan Groom of North Mahaska and Dillion Menke of Sigourney-Keota.
Pocahontas Area
All three Pocahontas Area wrestlers stayed alive with consolation round wins.
Jakob Lawson, William Lawson and Adam Marsh will all be competing on Friday. Jakob Lawson went 2-1, earning a technical fall vs. Kyler Happel of Lisbon and a pin vs. Brody Hosek of Belle Plaine in 58 seconds around a loss to Don Bosco’s Ty Martin at 106.
William Lawson lost to Connor Brown of Sioux Central in the opening round but survived with a 3-0 sudden-victory over Jaxon Edwards from Central Springs at 175. Marsh earned a 4-0 decision over Brody Dolph from Saint Ansgar, lost to Nathan Schoenfelder of Akron-Westfield and downed Sam Taylor of Underwood, 20-6, at 215.
South Central Calhoun
Curtis Bullock kept his tourney alive with a 51-second fall over Quinton Heistand of Woodbine at 120 pounds. Bullock earned a 49-second fall in the opening round over Braeden Thomas of Central Decatur before falling to Bo Hake of Louisa-Muscatine.
Kase Kraft and Cooper Nattress both had their seasons come to an end. Kraft finishes 42-17 overall and Nattress was 41-12.
East Sac County
Dawson Allen used a first-period fall to secure at least one more match at 165 pounds, pinning Sully Thompson from BGM in the consolations in 1:33. The Raider also posted a fall in 1:37 vs. Ryder Meeks from Lisbon to begin his day.
Allen was bested by Max Shanno of Riverside Oakland in the championship second round.
Cal McCollough had his state tourney run come to an end, falling twice at heavyweight. He ends the year with a record of 29-23.
Emmetsburg
While Bradyen Yates survived in the consolations, CJ Rodriguez had his season come to an end there.
Yates went 2-1 on the day, scoring a decision in the opening round and a 35-second fall in the consolations at 165 while Rodriguez won by fall in the first before back-to-back setbacks at 126.
North Union
Castor Kollasch went 0-2 at 144 pounds for the Warriors, as his season ends at 38-16 overall.
