Johnston ousts FD wrestlers

INDIANOLA — The Fort Dodge wrestling team will now turn all of its attention to the upcoming individual district tournament after being eliminated from team duals by Johnston here on Tuesday night.

The 18th-ranked (Class 3A) Dragons won eight matches to top the No. 15 Dodgers, 44-33.

Second-rated Indianola went on to qualify for state duals on Saturday in Coralville with a 60-9 win over Johnston in the finals.

It was a quick start for the Dodgers in the opening dual with Johnston, as freshman Knox Ayala earned a fall in just 80 seconds over Samuel White at 106 pounds. Sophomore Damien Yeoman followed with a fall in 2:33 over Jackson Gilbert, taking advantage of four takedowns before finishing Gilbert at 113.

Junior Trace Rial got Fort Dodge back on track after a loss at 120, pinning Coen Prevett in 1:41. The Dragons, though, answered with six straight wins, including five falls and a technical fall, to go up 35-18.

Senior Rylee Brown used a seven-point move in the third to erase a deficit vs. Kinnick Thompson, scoring a 15-9 decision to cut into the deficit at 165 pounds. Senior Jesse Egli recorded a second period fall at 190 over Max Kelly.

Senior Dreshaun Ross needed just 22 seconds to finish off Jahir Gutierrez for the fifth fall by Fort Dodge on the night.

“There were several swing matches and they just didn’t go our way,” FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said. “We had the chance to win the dual if they had, but the kids will learn from it and be better moving forward.”

Brown moved into 20th on the school’s career wins list with his 116th victory, Egli broke a tie with several others — including his brother, Duke — for 24th with his 112th career win, and Ross climbed to within one victory of his brother, Damarion, for ninth with his 140th victory in 142 matches.

The Dodgers recorded 18 takedowns to 10 by Johnston, but the Dragons were able to earn a pair of pins in matches they were down on the scoreboard in at the time.

Fort Dodge will now host a 3A district tournament on Feb. 14 beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Dodger gym.

Starting at $4.94/week.
