Iowa Central hosts regional openers

Saturday will feature a full day of regional tournament basketball action inside Hodges Fieldhouse, as both Iowa Central teams compete.

Up first will be the Triton women (22-8 overall) vs. Des Moines Area in the Region 11-A semifinals at 1 p.m. The No. 11 Iowa Central (23-6) men tip vs. North Iowa Area in the Region 11-B semis at 3:30 p.m.

During the regular season, Iowa Central and DMACC (22-8) split two games, with the Tritons winning the first, 51-44 at home, and the Bears posting a 68-35 victory late last month.

Trista Ohlmeier leads ICCC at 14 points per game, with Shakani Murray scoring 11 and Ashlin Jacobsen just over 10.

Alivia Carr paces DMACC at 14.6 points a night. Whitney Jensen and Chloe Costello each add 10.

Awaiting the Tritons with a win would be either Kirkwood or Ellsworth. If it is Kirkwood, the game would be in Cedar Rapids on Monday while Iowa Central would host if Ellsworth pulled the upset.

As hosts of the Region 11-B Tournament, the Tritons would welcome in the winner between Ellsworth and Northeast on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the title.

Iowa Central has won three straight and five of six around a loss at Kirkwood. They defeated NIACC in the regular season finale on Wednesday, 81-74, avenging a 104-99 overtime loss earlier this year to the Trojans.

Jordan Cain leads six players in double figures at 18 points per game, as Aleix Sempere adds 15, CJ Mitchell is at 14, Tashun Pender scores 13, Jalen Wynter adds 11 and Manny Lueth is just over 10.

NIACC (16-14) is paced by Jacob Martin, TJ Cusciotta and Lance Helming, as all three have scored over 300 points this season.

The higher seeded regional champion automatically advances to the NJCAA Div. II National Tournament. The lower seeded regional champion plays in a district championship for a spot at nationals.

The women’s national tournament takes place March 16-21 in Hickory, N.C. while the men’s event is March 16-21 in Danville, Ill.

Starting at $4.94/week.
