DES MOINES — Broedy Hendricks wasn’t happy after last year’s state tournament.
The Humboldt junior reached the semifinals, but it’s not what Hendricks wanted or expected after reaching the finals as a freshman.
“It means a lot to be back in the finals,” Hendricks said. “I’ve put in work in the offseason and pushed myself to the limits.”
There is still work to do, but Hendricks is in line for the 190 pound Class 2A state championship.
Hendricks (53-1), the two seed, beat No. 6 Josh Ringler (48-2) of Grinnell. Hendricks had a takedown and an escape for his points.
Now to earn his first state championship Hendricks will try to avenge his only loss of the season to top-seed Maximus Purdy (34-3) of Davenport Assumption.
“I just worked on my pace (after the last meeting with Purdy),” Hendricks said. “Sharpened my tools and it’s going to be a great match.”
Hendricks wanted to dominate the 190 pound field, and on Friday morning the two-time medalist did exactly that.
After a tight 7-3 win in his opener, Hendricks got back to work, pinning Brian Snyder of Centerville in 52 seconds.
“It’s great for Broedy to get back,” said Chad Beaman. “He wanted to get another takedown in that match and open up the score, but wrestled a very strategic and position-based match.
“We’ve adjusted a few things since that time (against Purdy) and just need to be a little more patient. Purdy stays in really low, great position.”
Caleb Vinsand (32-22) won his opening match at 144 with a fall in 57 seconds over Ben Buck of West Marshall. His tournament ended with an 11-3 setback to Jaxson Lundgren of North Fayette Valley.
