Gaels wrap up regular season
The St. Edmond basketball squads wrap up their respective regular season on Tuesday as they take on Webster City.
The Gael girls (14-5 overall, 9-4 in the North Central Conference) will tip at 6 p.m. against the Lynx (7-12, 4-10). The top-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys (18-2, 12-1) then take on the Lynx (2-16,1-11).
With a win, the St. Edmond boys would clinch at least a share of the NCC title with No. 7 (3A) Clear Lake (15-2, 10-1).
The Gaels vaulted back to the No. 1 spot in Class 1A with a spirited 48-44 upset over seventh-rated (3A) Clear Lake at home last Friday. Jakob Koopman led the Gaels with 17 points, while Carson Bargfrede added 13 and Hunter Horn 12.
St. Edmond is going for its second straight season sweep of the Lynx. The Gaels earned a 54-35 victory earlier this season.
Horn had a double-double in that contest with 32 points and 12 rebounds. Coyce Bertran led Webster City with 12 points, and Alex Staley had nine.
Horn, the program’s all-time leading scorer, is averaging 26.4 points and nine rebounds. Bargfrede (14.1) and Koopman (9.5) are next in line.
Webster City’s leading scorers are Bertran and Staley at 12.4 and 8.9 points, respectively.
The Gael girls are looking for their third straight season sweep of the Lynx. St. Edmond is currently in third place in the NCC. Clear Lake (17-3, 13-1) is the leader, followed by Algona (17-4, 12-1).
The Gaels are coming off a tight 43-42 loss to Clear Lake. St. Edmond freshman Eden Horn is averaging a double-double with 13.9 points and 14.6 rebounds.
Chloe Palmer (12.3), Abby Huss (7.2) and Sophia Schlienz (6.9) are next in line for the Gaels.
Webster City is led by sophomore post Evie Davis (14.3).
In the last meeting, Schlienz and Palmer had 12 each, while Horn had 10. For Webster City, Davis scored seven. Alivia Burns and Tristyn Wright contributed six each.
